The Devil Buck Dilemma
Posted By Myndi Clements at 12/18/2010 12:00:00 AM

On the evening hunt of 12-7-10, I believe I finally had the first encounter with the Devil Buck.  I have hunted this deer for three years and he has been nothing but a trail camera tease.  20101218221547687.jpg
Unfortunately on the night of the 7th he never came any closer than about 200 yards.  Since that hunt, I have replayed the video footage of him at least a dozen times.  Each time I came away feeling more confused than the last.  He acted and looked like a mature deer, however if this truly was the Devil Buck his rack had gone significantly downhill.  While that would be disappointing, it would not surprise me.  The pictures from last summer make this deer look way past his prime and with another year on him I wouldn’t expect him to add inches to his headgear.

While reviewing trail camera photos from this year, I came across the buck from the 7th.  When I got these photos I didn’t pay too much attention to them.  He looked like a nice deer but not something I would have considered to be the Devil Buck.  Now I’m starting to question that.  I pulled out all of the 2009 photos and tried to identify this deer.   I keep all of my pictures so I had hundreds to look at and couldn’t find one single picture that resembled this buck.  I was hoping to rule out the theory that this was the Devil Buck.  Instead all I did was provide more evidence to prove it.  Unfortunately, all of the photos from 2010 are either washed out or blurry.   I can’t say for sure if he has the tell tale devil points or not.

I hope this is a completely different deer and that the Devil Buck is still out there.  My gut is telling me that the buck from the 7th is indeed him.  While it’s sad to think he will never return to his glory, the thrill of the chase exceeds any score that he would have ever put up.  My 80 year old grandfather is coming down for a late season hunt.  I hope to find out for sure then.
