We have employed interns each of the past three years at Midwest Whitetail and we need to find two or three more for 2011. In most cases, our interns receive college credit for their time here. In a few other cases, we actually accepted recent graduates who wanted to learn more about the video industry and the hunting industry. It served a role in their decision making regarding "What do I want to do for a career?" In fact, our most recent hire, Jared Mills, came through this exact process during the 2010 season. Drew Yarkosky interned here for three years and now has a very good understanding of how this business works and how to produce good quality video.
We tailor each internship to the individual, but our ideal intern has some video production experience. That individual must be able to take the entire semester off and work here from August 1 through early January 2012. The job entails some filming and some hunting, but the primary focus is on video production. We are not looking to develop cameramen, we are looking for video editors. We produce tons of video out of the Midwest Whitetail office in Albia, IA each year and that is where the successful candidates will work.
You will work hard. We do pay the interns, but we don't pay them a lot - enough to offset basic living expenses. This is no hunting trip with your buddies; it is film-making boot camp. But you will come out of the program with a first-class education in how this stuff works in the real world. As Midwest Whitetail grows, we will occasionally hire a graduating intern. Long-term, I am sure we will gain a reputation for producing good employees and some of the industry production companies will start coming to us for potential hires.
