Rob Gregg – South Central Michigan

If you’ve been out lately I don’t have to tell you the weather conditions could be better. The wind has been out of the South for a week or so and along with the South wind comes the warmer temperatures.  It sure doe’t feel like deer hunting when you’re sweating through your camo but there is a silver lining. What Dan Frizzell and I have been doing lately is hunting some areas we can access by using the South wind in our favor. The deer in most of the farms we hunt are heavily hunted and they can pattern us pretty quickly. The South wind has let us come in to a few of our stands from a totally different direction than we typical do. It can be tough because we have to cross a river and take the long way around but I believe it’s worth it. The longer you can go without letting the deer know they are being hunted the better. We have had some close encounters but we’re still waiting on an older buck. We’ll let you know how this strategy is working so stay tuned and stay cool!

Brandon Hammonds - Southern Michigan

WOW! It is amazing how fast plans change as here in MI and all over the Midwest we have had unseasonably high temperatures and the start of a full moon. Combined, that can account for very little deer movement. In my case, that's been very true I have seen far less deer than usual. Even though it has been slow, I am still spending time in stand.  Also, I am taking more time on the way in during day-light and way out during day-light to look for new sign.

This week I noticed a lot of great rubs and scrapes popping up everywhere.  It is time to take advantage of that new information.  This week I have spent most of my time moving trail cameras over primary scrapes in order to try and get pictures of the deer using them. There is a cold front moving in later this week and my hope is those scrapes will double in triple in productivity! Stay tuned and I will bring you an update as to how this strategy plays out.
