The October Lull

It's mid-October, which may mean most of us are unfortunately experiencing a lot of late night movement on our trail cameras and very little daytime buck activity.  Right now we are running around a dozen trail cameras and nearly 100% of our buck movement has been between the hours of midnight and 6:00AM.  Once the sun breaks the horizon, the buck movement quickly comes to an end.

The combination of the full moon, 80 degree temps, and strong south winds are just not what any bowhunter asks for this time of year.  But, as I write this blog, tomorrow's morning low is to be close to freezing.....just in time for our favorite time of year!

During the past two years, Bo has harvested his two best bucks to date the weekend of October 22nd and 23rd.  Last year, Potato Digger, a 6 year old bully buck, came into rattling and a decoy for the last time as Bo smoked him at less than 10 yards off of the ground.

In 2010, Bo was hunting the same property in east central Kansas when he rattled in a 175-inch 5 year old to within bow range at 8:30 in
the morning.  This is the weekend those mature bucks seem to start being slightly more visible during daylight and your chances of harvesting a giant greatly increase.

With the cold front that pushed through the Midwest and the chance that the early fawns may just becoming into estrus, you need to be in the tree this weekend.  Due to the significant drought that has been felt throughout Kansas, we will be targeting ponds.  If you can find water, you will find deer.  Also, crops are nearly all out.  Focus on the primary food source for you area - whether that is cut corn, green food plots, or acorns.

Best of luck to everyone this week!
