Plan of Attack

With the Pennsylvania archery season in full swing and the cooler temperatures of October finally setting in our NE team is firing on all gears. This is our first year filming hunts for MidWestWhitetail and so far it has been quite successful. Lets re-cap the first two weeks of the season. Ian was the first to connect on film, shooting a nice big fat doe on a soybean field out near his house. He managed to get this all on film by himself, as the rest of us had to work. The following weekend October 8th, my buddy and I went out to the food plot we put in at the "farm" for an evening sit. Our goal was slick heads and thats just what we managed to put an arrow through. In fact we doubled. You should be able to watch the footage pretty soon here on the website. (Watch Midwest Whitetail Northeast Show "Early Season Bucks" )We have been hunting hard and our tactics are going to be switching here shortly. With the colder weather setting in we are seeing a lot more mature buck activity. Having already spotted one of our biggest hit list bucks (Juggernaught) on his feet well into daylight. Pre-rut is in the air and its time to start are pre-rut tactics, it always feels good putting that grunt call in the pack along with some rattling antlers. Its definitely the time of year to be transitioning from the food to bed, bed to food early season tactic. Most of our bucks bachelor groups are all split up with bucks being spotted in daylight. Not much rut activity yet, but the necks are swelling and the RUT is creeping up on us!

Plan of attack:
-From Oct 19-29th if you can find a early scrape line this is the place to be even if you do not have a stand there get one in and hunt it. It wont be long before they will start "scent checking" those scrapes and a lot of times will discontinue heavy use (especially when does get hot) it is easier for them and more time efficient to simply scent check them.
- This will also be a great time to dust off them rattling horns and give them a shot. I wouldn't do any serious "heated battles" type rattling, but clicking them together for short periods may just entice ol smokey ghost monsty horns to get up a little early to see what competition is in his area.
- And always sit those funnels and bottlenecks as Halloween creeps up on us its just a matter of time before those big old bucks will start cruising and moving during daylight hours. Really you cannot go wrong with these type of spots at anytime of the season though.
- I've also found that you can see big bucks moving quite late in the morning this time of year... I'm talking 10-11am. Not really cruising for does, but just kinda walking around... So don't get discouraged and head home early!! Can't kill em from the couch!

The October Lull is reaching its end guys, get out there and shoot straight!

Cheers,
Dr. C (NE team Curtis Weinstein, Kurt Roberts, Ian and Jared Kramer)
