I think the picture turned out nice.  I have had a number of people ask what the
buck scored.  I don't know, but I think he is deceptive.  He has long beams and
14 inches of stickers around his bases.  That adds up fast.  Regardless, a dandy!

Happy Halloween.
The kids went trick or treating.  Jordan was a ghost and Drew was a football player.  I wanted to go as a hunter but they wouldn't let me.  Something about being embarrassed.  Not sure what that was all about.  I spent the day doing interviews for the many series we now produce (Midwest Whitetail, Cabela's and American Hunter).  Then we shot some photos of the buck and got him off to the locker plant

I am not going to hunt tomorrow either, Too Warm!  But I will bring you some updates on what the guys from the office saw today and tomorrow morning.  It is

I just ran this photo a few days ago, but here's another look at what the
buck looked like on the hoof.  He looked big coming in too!

supposed to be in the mid-70s here so I am going to sit it out, get some work done and be ready for the next cold front that is supposed to come through Wednesday and Thursday.  That should really get things cranking.  I am excited to see what else we can see this fall.  I still have my statewide tag (used the landowner tag on this buck).  Time for all of us to get serious.

NOVEMBER 1

I didn't hunt on November 1.  In fact, I'm not going to hunt today, November 2, either.  I still have plenty of work to do and family activities.  I am also going to boil down the skull to create a European mount of that buck I shot Sunday.  I have started doing a lot of European mounts on my bucks.  They look good and fit better into the house.  I'll post of photo tonight of the finished product.  In fact, I just may post a photo of each stage of the project.

Weather is very quirky right now.  The wind is supposed to switch from SW to NW this morning (November 2).  Not sure I have a stand for that!  I do think that when the cold front goes through, things will really start to pick up.  The timing is good and when you combine November 3 - 10 with cool (or even seasonal) temperatures, good things usually happen.  Let's all hope it stays cool for a while.   The front is coming.

This is my starting point for today's project.  Let's see how far I get.

The way I see it, November 3 should be a good day all over the Midwest.  Got a report from my friend John Dudley that he had three mature bucks chasing a doe on Halloween morning.  Then nothing yesterday.  He is certain that the doe was getting ready to come into estrous and was drawing all the attention.  That is how it works at this part of the season.  The bucks are really keyed up for that first hot doe in his core area.  When she comes in, he will try to find her.   Normally, this occurs during the next few days - November 3 through November 6, roughly.

NOVEMBER 2

This is as as far as I got yesterday (November 2).  I got him skinned and the initial boil-off done.  Then I scraped off the bulk of the tissue.  It is pretty clean now, but I still need to boil it again for a short time and then pick out all the tissue in the nasal area.  That takes a while.  People who do a lot of these use a pressure washer to clean them off after the initial boil. I should probably get one because I do a lot of these now.  I like the way these skull mounts look

If this rain lets up, I will go hunting this morning.  I am not going to drag an expensive camera out into the rain.  It may be afternoon before I get out there.

Good luck, these next few days should be good.  No more boiling - We'll be back to the video blogs starting November 3!
