The Rut is Finally Here

November has finally arrived!!  Bo and I have been hunting hard and are currently in the middle of an 8 day vacation that is dedicated to filling tags.  Starting on November 3rd, we saw very little cruising and/or bumping, even by the younger bucks in NW Missouri.  But we did see First Pull (a 6.5 year old) walking across an open pasture at 9:30 AM.  Not sure what his intensions were, but this buck had been strictly nocturnal up until that sighting.  Unfortunately he was about 150 yards out and paid little attention to our calling.

Now on to Kansas. The chasing has definitely started to pick up in the last couple of days.  It is still primarily little bucks that are doing the bumping, but we have seen one shooter that was trailing a doe that was being bumped by a couple young bucks.  The cold front that came through last week seemed to really jump start the buck movement.  We have seen a shooter buck on every single sit between Thursday and Saturday (when this blog was written).  Bucks have been responding extremely well to decoying, rattling and grunting.  On Saturday morning, Bo and I saw 31 deer from the stand.  There was not any cruising or bumping, but at 9:00AM, the one and only shooter we saw stepped out at 30 yards to hit a scrape!

Right now it's pretty simple - if you are not in the deer woods, you are missing out!  Get out, bring the decoy and rattling antlers, and best of luck filling that buck tag! Tis the season!!
