I didn't hunt today. I had enough work to do in the office that I stayed in. It was raining; video cameras and rain don't mix, so as much as I want to hunt November 8, I stayed in. Jared Mills and Drew Yarkosky hunted in a good area this morning but saw nothing - not a single deer.
I think if you are in an area with a hot doe you are covered up with bucks, but it seems again this year that if you aren't, you will struggle. Not sure why the rut is so soft this year. I have not seen any mature bucks cruising, very few immature bucks cruising and only one chase. Nothing like the year's prior to 2010. Are the deer changing? I doubt it. Something is going on though.
However, a few other guys report seeing multiple mature bucks from their stand. In their case, I think there must be a hot doe nearby.
I will back in the stand again tomorrow. It is supposed to be cold and windy (my favorite conditions) with a stiff NW wind. Perfect for the stand I want to hunt.
I am going to leave you with a photo of a buck that a friend of mine, Jim Hill, shot yesterday a few miles from my home. Good buck. Jim hunts hard and shot the buck on November 7 at 11:15 AM.
Good luck.
