DUSTIN NIPPERT SCORES!
Although we don't have the full story
in yet of just
how things went down, we do know that Dustin
Nippert put the Hoyt to work this evening on one of
his great hit list bucks. Dustin just sent the
pictures from his phone of the buck he and Derik
call "MOOSE BUCK". All that we know at this
point is that Dustin is one happy bowhunter! We
also know that he was waiting in his treestand, on
probably the coldest day thus far this hunting season,
and intercepted Moose Buck as he left his
bedroom on route to the kitchen! It's late season
action at its finest! Dustin and Derik have been
watching this buck for the past few years and are
extremely happy to finally put an end to the story.
As we gather more information about the hunt we
will pass it along to you. You can be sure that
you will see all the action on next week's show.
All of us here at Midwest Whitetail would like to
congratulate Dustin on an outstanding buck!
What a way to kick off the new year!
HERE IS A PICTURE OF
MOOSE BUCK FROM EARLIER
THIS SEASON.
THIS IS WHAT MOOSE BUCK
LOOKED LIKE LAST YEAR.

Statewide Muzzleloader Season Dates are January 7-10
Governor John Kasich today issued an emergency rule reiterating that the statewide muzzleloader
season for deer is January 7-10, as published in the 2011-12 Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations
booklet.
The emergency rule was requested by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division
of Wildlife because the dates printed in the hunting regulations handbook were inconsistent with the
Ohio Administrative Code.

LATE SEASON - HERE WE GO!
With muzzleloader season kicking
off on Saturday, January 7, several
of the Ohio Pro Staff are
definitely excited. The reason
is....We still have buck tags! It's
been a season full of ups and downs
for team Ohio. Without a doubt,
it's been our toughest season yet for
knocking down mature
whitetails on camera. However,
with that being said, the enthusiasm
is peaking as we enter the late
season action. There's no question
that late season can be one of the
most deadly times of the year to
kill a big buck. Not only the bucks,
but all deer are now on a winter feeding pattern. If you can find a late season food source and do a
bit of thinking about where you need to be, then your odds of tagging a buck will significantly
increase. It sounds simple but obviously the typical whitetail variables always come into play and
nothing is ever a sure thing when it comes to whitetails. Our Pro Staff still have several great hit
list bucks roaming the woods of
Ohio and are busy scheming and
dreaming about how to put one
down on camera. When they do,
we'll bring you the action. The
"holiday break" is over and we're
going to be hitting it hard until the
end of season. Reports from the
last few days indicate that the
whitetails have been feeding
heavily in the evenings on the
Frigid Forage Brassica based plots
as well as in the standing corn and
bean fields. Obviously, that's not
surprising but don't count out a
good hay field or really, the best available food source in any area. We have also had several reports
of bucks dropping their antlers already. So, if you're managing
for mature whitetails, you really should take a second look before pulling the trigger. As for bitter
cold temps and knee deep snow,
we
haven't seen much of that yet, at least not
in Southeast Ohio.
A few cold and snowy nights have visited
us but for the most part, the rest of the
week is supposed to be fairly mild.
Whatever the weather offers us, we can
guarantee that we'll be out there.
We wish you all the best of luck during
the upcoming muzzleloader season.
Please be safe.
Good luck & God Bless!

has become an annual event for the Bryant family. Jeff Bryant, his wife Nicole and his Dad, Greg Bryant have enjoyed the December trip for several years now and we've been blessed to follow their adventures here at Midwest Whitetail Ohio. They have taken several outstanding bucks over the years and this season was no different. With Greg behind the camera, Jeff was able to put another giant buck on the ground. It's always fun to go over-the-shoulder with this deer hunting Christian family.
Derik and I have been having
a really tough season this year, with me having my personal worst up to this point. The first gun season Derik started a new job so he didn't get to hunt til the weekend. We ended up harvesting a few does on Sunday to wrap up the gun season on a good note. Not having seen any shooter bucks we were looking forward to the second gun season. We were getting some pics of good bucks so we were pretty optimistic. Finally getting some colder weather wasn't going to hurt matters either. Our Frigid Forage food plots were getting hit but this cold snap definitely had deer hitting them harder. Sunday night found us in a in a ground blind overlooking a Big n Beasty Plot. Long story short this big 8 point, "King", walks in behind us and I missed him at 90 yards. So to this point I have missed 2 does and now this awesome buck. So to say I am looking for redemption would be an understatement. We are seeing new deer show up on our plots and we still have time before they start dropping their antlers so we're keeping our fingers crossed. We want to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and hope everyone stays safe and finishes the year on a good note. Good luck and be safe.

Dad hunted a couple times this week and had some action. One evening, he saw several bucks chasing a hot doe but none of them were within range or big enough for him. I hunted one day of the second gun season and saw several does as well as a few small bucks but nothing mature. The deer are really hammering the Frigid Forage Big 'n Beasty plots right now. I actually watched them walk through a standing field of corn to get to the turnips. Dad set up a new blind on a new farm and we're excited about late season. Nearly all of my biggest bucks have been taken after gun season so we're keeping our fingers crossed and the trail cams running! We'll be concentrating on the food sources. That's the plan that has worked in the past and we're going to stick with it.
Boy the hunting season has gotten harder and harder for me here in Central Ohio. We have had so much rain/bad weather when I have planned on hunting. The first two days of gun season was bad. Tj did manage to get a nice doe. We seen lots of deer, and seen some smaller bucks. But that nice buck never did show up. Monday and Tuesday me and Tj sat in the blind a combined 18hrs. Most of that time it rained and was windy. I did see one really nice but the Saturday of gun season but was not able to get the buck. This buck was on a farm over towards Pickaway County that I hunt. I'm gonna try to sneak back over there this coming weekend and see if I can't see this buck again. Still no big bucks on the camera. I'm hoping for some snow soon so I can see where the deer are at and try to get after a big one late season. Good luck to the rest of you guys that are in the same boat as me and Tj.

Dad and I did not hunt this week. As much as we both wanted to, we both had to catch up on some much needed work. Dad did put a new blind up and my nephews have been monitoring the the trail cams. For the first year in a long time, we all still have a buck tag. We're going to hit it hard late season. Hopefully, the bucks will hold onto those antlers for a while. It seems really early, but I filmed a buck during gun season that had already shed his antlers. He looked and acted healthy so I really don't know what the deal was. I've seen bucks shed by the first of December but only a few times over the years and typically it was caused by an injury or an unhealthy deer. Oh well, we're going to be out there this weekend and hunting hard. We'll see what happens!
Ohio's week long gun season was a week of ups and downs for us, but most of it was down. We spent almost four whole days in the Muddy stands. Monday we sat in the rain the entire day without seeing a deer. Friday was the same thing minus the rain. Saturday was a different story, deer were everywhere and we had 30 plus encounters during the day. One of those was a doe in estrus, I think she had every 1 1/2 year old buck on the property chasing her. The unfortunate part is there were no mature bucks. Sunday was another slow day, we only saw one deer. It was also a bad week for our camera, we had some problems with it and today I packed it up and sent it out to be repaired. I hope that we can have it back in time for the next gun season but we will to wait and see about that.
JASON & TED HUNTSMAN - Southeast
Well, gun season wasn't what we were hoping it would be. The areas we hunt receive a ton of pressure and we just didn't see the deer. It's that simple. We saw a few small bucks and a few does but nothing really worth talking about. We hunted all week and didn't see a shooter. We are going to get the trail cameras back out and see what we can find as well as bowhunt the food plots in the evenings and hope for the best. That's all we can do at this point. It's been a frustrating year to say the least but we're not giving up yet.
NATE LITTLE - Southeast
Since I already tagged a buck, I concentrated on finding a good deer for my son Easton. We definitely saw deer but just not the right one. Easton actually passed on a few young bucks and I was surprised to see him make management decisions like that at such a young age. We're going to try to find a good buck coming into a food source and see if we can't fill Easton's tag .
