Mike Versland – Metro
Hey folks, I hope your 2011 season was a success! I finally just now found the time to sit down and do a quick wrap up of the year. Speaking of wrapping things up, I did just that during the last half hour of the regular archery season in Wisconsin when I shot two does. It felt great to finally let some arrows fly, and it felt even better to see both of the arrows strike exactly where I was aiming. Both deer dropped within sight. It seems ironic that I have already killed more deer in 2012 than I did in 2011.
Although the 2011 season just ended I have already been busy preparing and scheming for the 2012 season, looking at maps and calendars and scouting new land trying to figure out where and when I will hunt this year. In addition, I have placed 2 of my trail cameras on new land and amazingly I have as many pictures of big bucks in 2012 as I did in 2011.
Over the next few months I plan to spend a lot of time scouting new land and looking for shed antlers. Considering that there is very little snow this year and the weather has not been too cold I should be able to find more antlers than I have the past two years. For example last year I only found 5 antlers, and none were worth bragging about. I have noticed that a few bucks have already shed their antlers this year, but most are still carrying. I will try to stay out of the prime areas for a bit yet, as I do not want to scare off any giant bucks that still have antlers. Although many people find antlers quite early in the year (some even in December) based on my past experience the best time to look for antlers in Minnesota is in March.
If you get a chance to get outside this winter try to spend some time looking for antlers or scouting for next season. No matter if you are successful or not, time in the woods is never wasted. Get out there!!
Until next time,
Mike Versland
