Jason moved to Southern Iowa after getting his Biotechnology degree from St. Cloud State University in MN in the spring of 1998. While the need to pay the bills may have moved him to Iowa, his passion and desire for big whitetails will certainly keep him in the area for years to come. Jason hunts and owns land with pro staffer Brock Halstead. Jason and Brock believe the key to success revolves around food plots. Summers are spent planting and maintaining them in hopes of reaping the benefits in the fall.
Jason's Hit List
Last year Jason was hunting managment deer and was rewared with a big old mature 8 point shown on Midwest Whitetail Episode 14. Jason's hit list is off to a fast start and he can't wait for October.
"THE PATRIARCH" is at the top of the list. Websters's dictionay defines a Patriarch as the oldest member or representative of a group. This deer definitely fits that description. He is an impressive main frame 10 point with a bonus split G-2. Jason believes this deer could easily push into the lower 170's. "The Patriarch" is a very cautious deer and will be a hard animal to hunt. This video shows "The Patriarch" on August 6, 2009. Jason has had two sightings of this deer and both times he didnt show up until last light.
This is the latest video of the "Patriarch". Jason was able to film him in the same area about a week after he filmed the video above. The "Patriach" continues to look good in front of the camera and I'm sure that Jason is thinking that he would look good on the wall at the end of the year.
"HIGH ROLLER". This deer showed up on 8/2/09 as Jason was sitting in his Bad Boy tucked into a brushy fence line watching a food plot. High Roller appeared and started on a path that would put him in Jason's lap. Jason was fortunate enough to have somebody make some noise about a half mile away. The noise put the deer on alert and he headed for cover. That allowed Jason to slip out of the area unnoticed. Jason believes this deer will score in the 160's. Not bad for a main frame 8!
"DEVIL BUCK": This buck is named for the points coming from both bases. These trail cam photos were taken on July 9th 2009. This deer appears to have great mass and lots of character.
Jason hasn't seen this deer since these photos were taken and is patiently waiting for the day he returns. Jason hopes he still had some growing to do and will put on a few more inches. Jason thinks this deer will score in the lower 150's.
Jason never saw this deer during the 2009 hunting season. He did show back up on the trail cams until he shed out in early February. Jason was lucky enough to find one of his sheds from 2009 and will be the top buck on his hit list for 2010.
"COOKIE JAR": This buck originally appeared on Jason's trail camera with the "Devil Buck" on July 9, 2009. He appeared to be a great buck but was lacking the tine length to push him over the edge. This deer has been a regular on Jason's trail camera and has improved significantly.
Jason was able to video this deer on 8-6-2009 and was impressed with what he saw. While he will probably score in the 160's, Jason isnt sure its a deer he should take. The buck may only be 3.5 years old and if thats true he could be a real whopper next year. If this deer does present Jason with an opportunity, it will be a game time decsion and he might just get his hand caught in the Cookie Jar.
"SPLITS": Splits gets his name from the split G-2 and G-3 he sports. Jason had a very close encounter with this deer the first week of August when he was filming a bean field. This mature deer came within bow range. This deer has good mass and will score around 140.
"NUMBER 7": This deer has been hanging out with "Splits". He also came into bow range in early August and looks to be mature. While he won't score a lick, sometimes its not about score. Jason loves to hunt and kill big bodied whitetails, and this one should be an angus bull come fall.
In the 2009 late muzzleloader season Jason was able to get in range and close the deal on this buck. To see how the hunt unfolded watch Episode 21 of Midwest Whitetail-Iowa 2009 show.
"SUPERFREAK": This is one of Jason's newest bucks to the hit list. This deer gets the name "Superfreak" because his rack is freaky. He looks to be mature and ready to be shot. It would be nice to get "Superfreak" out of the genetic line so that have a bunch of younger bucks looking like him. It will be watching Jason as he chases down "Superfreak" this season.
