Scott West grew up in Minnesota and still lives there today. In his early years, Scott enjoyed many forms of small game hunting, especially the family pheasant hunts in southern Minnesota. As he grew, Scott was introduced to the world of whitetail hunting and never missed an opportunity to spend the rifle opener with his family. Upon meeting the challenges of rifle hunting, Scott enthusiastically picked up a bow and headed for the big woods of northern Minnesota. After his first hunt with his Hoyt, he never looked back ~ archery was his game!
Recently Scott removed his Hoyt from the big woods up north and placed it into the trees of the north Metro area of the Twin Cities. It is an entirely different game trying to meet the challenges of hunting in the Metro where the monster bucks get schooled on human behavior on a daily basis.
Scott's Hit List
The following words are Scott's.
Creating a hit list on small acreage located in the Twin Cities Metro area is a hunt in and of itself. There is always the contending factor of neighboring properties who supply year-round feeders to the local herds and those who have "No Hunting" signs posted. Despite these challenges, I have managed to find a few so far.
"GILLIGAN": I found his shed this past spring on a small deserted island in the middle of a huge swamp. I also found a shed out there from another nice buck. At this point, I will not be doing any more pre season scouting of this area. I have already placed my stands where I need them and it is just too risky to go in for random visits, I do not want to spook him away.
"THE NEIGHBOR": This one quite literally lives across the street from our home. Amazingly, he stopped by for a photo-op only three hours after I set up the trail cam on my neighbor’s property. After a week of daily visits from this buck, I pulled the camera and have since left him in peace. I will try to get more pics of him later. For now, I am confident he will be around.
"THE INSIDER": I spotted a nice buck who I think will score in the mid 130’s. He is a non-typical six by three with a long tine coming off the inside of his right main beam. For this reason, I am calling him “The Insider”.
"CITY SLICKER": He gets his name simply because it was the first thought that ran through my head when I first saw him. He is going to be a hard deer to kill; I have a feeling he is as wise as he is impressive. This is the buck I want the most and I have a feeling he will also be my most challenging hunt this season. If, or when, I get to put a tape on him, I think he will score somewhere in the mid-140’s.
