Peak Week??

Regardless of what you consider the peak of the Iowa rut, there is no better time to be in the stand than during the next 7-14 days. If you still have a tag to fill, never fear, there is a lot of time left!
Here is my best advice for this time of year:
It has been unseasonably warm over the past few days, but almost expected in Iowa. What would an Iowa November be without a couple of 70 degree plus days?? Pay close attention to the weather, if you find a cold front is about to hit, bringing a substantial drop in temperature of about 10 degrees, GET IN THE STAND and sit as long as you possibly can. If you can plan an all day hunt, I recommend it!
We are nearing the dreaded "Lock-Down" phase of the rut. What that means is mature deer find a doe who is very near to coming into heat and being willing to breed, and he is absolutely not willing to leave her. If she beds down, he will bed down with her to keep his eye on her. This makes seeing mature bucks on their feet a rare occurance, but this situation should not keep you from spending time in the tree because as soon as the big boys successfully breeds the doe, he is off to find the next eligible bachelorette; and that could happen ANY TIME. If you see a deer during mid-day, chances are good that it will be a mature buck.

Tyler Halverson
A local hunter was hunting the same piece of public ground and shot the big 8 "The Bull" 152 bone score.
A Friend who hunts the farm that borders the public ground shot the big 9 "Baby 4" 155 bone score.
I had an encounter with a super wide 9 "Straight Nine" this morning but he caught my wind within inches of entering my shooting lane, I had the sight on his shoulder waiting for him to move just a few inches to get a shot at his lungs, at 20yds.
So I have two bucks from my hitlist gone in one day and almost shot another one off the list , must be the rut or something:)
