200 INCH BUCK FEATURED THURSDAY
Posted By Ohio at 11/24/2009 12:00:00 AM
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A WEEK CAN MAKE!

Last week, several mature bucks were locked down with does and made the hunting difficult for the Ohio Pro Staff.  This week, the hunting changed dramatically!  Cool temperatures and the majority of does being already bred meant that the big boys were on their feet and resulted in some amazing hunting action for our teams.

SHOW 16: 2009 YOUTH HUNT:

The hunt was a success once again.  My nephew, Colten Strauss, and I teamed up for another exciting hunt.  We were set up on a food plot and a hot doe had the bucks running crazy!  Colten connected with the best buck of his life.  Be sure to watch Episode 16 to see all the action.

Josh Prater also had some exciting action behind the camera for a very excited youth hunter and that action will be seen next Tuesday.  In all, the youth hunt was a true success.

The timing of Ohio's Youth Season puts young hunters in the position to kill a world-class buck when the hunting is arguably at its best of the year.

THURSDAY SHOW:

We will be having two shows this week.  On Thursday, we will have another fast-paced show.
Dustin Nippert traveled to Illinois and takes the best buck of his life while his brother Derik is at home in Ohio managing the doe population.  Also, Ohio Pro-Staffer Justin Mullins arrows a unique buck with his Dad, Jeff Mullins, behind the camera.

200 Inch Buck

Thursday's show will also feature a 200 inch buck taken on Friday by bowhunter Brian Peters. We had the opportunity to meet with Brian and see the buck while he gave us the inside story on how he managed to arrow this world-class buck.  The buck green scores at slightly over 200 inches with an unofficial net green score 194 4/8 typical.  It's one of the biggest typicals that I've ever been fortunate enough to lay my hands on.

Be sure to stop back on Thanksgiving day to see all the action.

DEER MOVEMENT:

Like we've often said, the rut is often "Hit & Miss".  Right now, the majority of the does are bred and the bucks are cruising to find the last of remaining hot females. The bucks are also beginning to take a bit of a break to feed and attempt to rebuild their body fat for the upcoming winter.  The intense chasing of the rut has them worn down and probably a bit tired.  However, the does still take precedence over the food.  Thanksgiving week has traditionally been a great time to see the true giants of Ohio on their feet during daylight hours.

Food Plots and food sources are the areas that we are concentrating on in the evenings.  It's a win-win situation.  Bucks will check the areas for hot does and if nothing is there will often take a the time to grab a bite to eat now that the rut is winding down.  In the mornings we continue to concentrate on doe bedding areas and travel routes leading to them.

It's not over yet.  Rattling this week can also produce some great results.  Actually, I personally have rattled in more mature bucks during Thanksgiving week than any other time of the season.

By all means if you have the opportunity to climb into your stand, do so.  Now is a great time to be in the woods.

Good Huntin' & God Bless,
