OPENING WEEKEND UPDATE
Posted By Wisconsin at 11/24/2009 12:00:00 AM

With unseasonably warm temperatures and a dense morning fog, many hunters were left empty handed after the opening weekend. The DNR reports deer harvests to be down 25% from last year at the end shooting hours on Sunday November 22nd.

Fog made shooting very tough.
This year the deer season in Wisconsin has been one of the most difficult ones in many years. In early November during peak rut times the weather was in the 70s.   This caused much of the activity and breeding to take place under darkness. Compounding the problem was the high moisture content of the corn surrounding central Wisconsin. This left a lot of the corn still standing going into the gun season. Local farmers have reported that this fall the corn was about one month behind from last year. On top of those two factors, opening weekend was plagued with 50 degree weather and lingering fog in the early a.m. This allowed many deer to sneak right by hunters making it safely into their bedrooms.

My advice is to try staying positive and continue to be on stand. The bucks will again be searching for any does that haven’t been bred. During the week, many discouraged gun hunters will be forming deer drives forcing deer to move. Some of those big bucks could easily move into to your area for the rest of the season.

Marsh areas can be a good place to look for
pressured deer.

Also, the weather forecast for the end of this week looks good. Temperatures below freezing and maybe a little snow will definitely make the deer more active. In the mornings concentrate your efforts on the thickest nastiest cover you can find. Concentrate on hunting the food sources toward the evening hours. Stay patient and this advice will pay off.

Good Luck Hunting and be safe.
