Who stole my deer and who took the Rut!?
The title of this article sums up my season to a T. My deer are gone and the rut was non-existant in my area. In this weeks show I talked about my season and I wanted to use this article to dive into a little more detail because there is so much more to the story. I hunt a total of 80 acres in the North Metro. It is actually 3 different properties that I hunt; one is 20 acres, one is 40 acres and the last one in the line is 20 acres all connected. This past summer I put trail cameras out everywhere and saw a lot of deer. I saw a ton of small but nice bucks and I saw a few monsters! I am not new to this property. I actually lived here for a couple years starting in 2006 so I know the area well and I also know the travel routes of the deer pretty well. To be honest I thought I was going to harvest one of my bucks in the first couple weeks and if that was not the case the rut would of been a slam dunk! Not the case!
So what's the problem? I think it has a lot to do with food. Most of the food is far off to my east and that is where the deer tend to hang out. I talk with one land owner quite a bit and on any given evening there is 20 - 35 deer in one of his fields. Now these deer have no reason to come back my way but they do to a bedding area that borders my property and spills over a little bit, but to get them to come farther is not an easy task and I haven't been seeing it. I'm really hoping once these temps and the season change they will begin to head my way a little more.
So what am I doing? I'm basically waiting and I think that in the next week or so I will begin to see some of these deer show up. Last night after I was done with my hunt I put out a few trail cameras in key areas that I plan to hunt. One is a bedding area and the other is a funnel area that the deer do use. The funnel area is actually right by the cherry tree stand that I talked about and the bedding area is the one directly to the east from there which I also mentioned. These two areas will be my focus in the next few weeks. Check back on next weeks show and I will take a minute to discus this a bit more, show you a map and reveal a weeks worth of trail camera photos! I can hardly wait to see who if anyone shows up on those cameras! If all else fails I do have property in Taylors Falls and Red Wing as well and there is some nice deer around there too.
Thanks for reading and check back next week to see what happens!
Tim
