Haven't filled your buck tag?? Your not alone.

Christmas is rapidly approaching, which means a couple different things to we deer hunters. 1) If we're lucky we'll get some sweet gear from our loved who ones who understand (or, better yet, probably don't understand) our obsession with chasing whitetails, or 2) The season is drawing close to being complete. Which means this is another good news/bad news blog.
I can't speak for everyone on the Indiana Pro Staff, but I can tell you that my season hasn't been what I thought it would be. In my talks with Todd, it sounds like I'm definitely not the only one. And, after having talked with fellow whitetail nuts from around the Midwest we aren't even the only state that has experienced some bad deer hunting.
Blogs all over the internet are bemoaning the standing corn, horrible wet warm weather, and crazy moon phases that seem to put the whammy on the Rut all over the Region. So, don't feel so bad, guys, we aren't the only ones. While there are many happy hunters who have filled tags all across the continent, there are many more who haven't.
I don't know about you, but I'm not one to make excuses for a lack of success. But, when you don't have an opportunity at a shooter the entire season, well, that's another matter all together. Don't get me wrong, deer season is awesome every year no matter what. Any time I can go to the woods and enjoy watching my favorite species do their thing in a wild, free ranging scenario, life is good. But, I'd like to at least have one opportunity at a "shooter" buck; something I haven't since starting back on September 15. There have been some close calls at a few "middlin'" bucks, but no real knee knockers.
But, again, I don't want to come across as defeatist here. And, to be sure our season isn't over just yet. We still have a few days of black powder season left, and then a couple more weeks of late archery season. It ain't over until the proverbial fat lady sings, and she hasn't even begun to warm up her oversized vocal cords. Until she does I, for one, will continue my relentless (and down right cold) pursuit of that majestic monster buck. There are still plenty of them left, even though they might not be showing themselves much during legal shooting hours.
Which leads me to this stunning conclusion. There is no amount of bad hunting weather, moon phases gone awry, standing cornfields, freezing cold weather and wind, trespassers, unscrupulous thieves (who jacked my Ameristep ground blind, brand new Delta Decoy that was hand customized, one Renzo flat doe decoy, and a beautiful Realtree Hardwoods HD camo chair that was a gift from my brother, David...RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!,no less....I really needed to vent on that one, thanks for listening!), or uncooperating whitetail bucks that will ever keep me from enjoying this passion that we all share for this majestic species. Ever.
I want to wish everyone a safe and prosperous final to the rest of the season. If you haven't scored, keep after it guys (and gals). Also, have a very Merry Christmas! May the good Lord bless you all in your pursuit of giant whitetails and happiness on Earth.
