It is possible to have too many deer when trying to hunt a late season food source. All those eyes (and their wary late season nature) make it really tough to get away with any movement. |
I have had one very exciting encounter with a mature buck - the one I hit in the neck back in late November - but other than that, it has been very tough to even see a mature buck. You can watch that hunt on Episode 25. But, man I have seen tons of does. Too many, actually. We can't even blink up there in the tree, let alone swing a camera around, without becoming the target of a dozen sets of eyes. It got so bad that I finally gave up on the big fields and large deer numbers and began looking for places with fewer deer. That's right, I am looking for less deer. Strange isn't it?

| This is the buck we saw on Dec. 26. Coyotes blew the field and we have not seen him since. I have all but given up hunting that field because there are so many does coming out there that it is nearly impossible to hunt the spot with a bow. They always see us and bust us before the time when this brute would come out. |
This past week taught me an important lesson. Next year, I am going to have more food plots but keep them smaller. Several small plots are much better than a few large ones - especially when hunting with a bow. With a gun, a shooting house and a large plot will work just fine, but when you try to climb into a tree with a bow, too many deer are a definite liability. Who would have thought?
