THERE'S STILL TIME TO TAG A BUCK!
Posted By Ohio at 1/13/2010 12:00:00 AM
With only a few weeks left in the season, some of us Ohio bowhunters still have an unfilled buck tag in our pockets.  With antlers dropping left and right, the possibility of filling that tag seems to be diminishing with each sunset.  However, don't give up just yet because there is still time to put some bone in the bed of the truck!

Late season food sources are definitely the key right now.  We have already had a cold and snowy winter but the forecast seems to involve some warmer temperatures over the next week.  The bucks will be feeding and you just need to be there waiting.

Again, the brassica plots as well as standing corn, soybeans and winter-wheat are getting hit hard right now.  Corn feeders are also very effective at this time of year.  Competition for food seems to be driving the deer to enter the plots earlier, well before dark, giving you the opportunity to arrow a usually nocturnal buck.

Late season can obviously provide a great opportunity to fill a tag if you are willing to battle the elements.  I personally have taken some of my best bucks during January.  Concentrate on the food sources and pinch-points leading to and from the bedding areas.  Also, pay attention to the tracks.  With the snow, it's the easiest time of year to read the sign and see where the deer are feeding as well as determine the major trails and travel routes.

Several bucks have already shed so again be careful and really take a good luck at the deer before letting an arrow fly if you do not want to shoot a shed buck.

Remember, there's still time left.  Bundle up and get out there!
