It is like Opening Day!
Friday, March 12 was the first day of shed hunting on my farm for the year. Well, I guess Scott fought the snow and hunted it a couple of times and found about ten, but this was the first real effort, with a big crew to scour the place. Usually, we start much earlier, but this year with the snow cover it was really tough going.
Left to right: Will Prucha, Bill Prucha, Scott Prucha, Chad Lathrop,
Kurt Schroeder with the antlers they found on Day 1.
Day One results: 28 or 29 antlers. The guys also found a few small bucks dead. I really hate that. I am not sure what is killing them. I don't think it is hunting pressure, though some certainly will die from wounding shots. I think this year it was the result of natural mortality. Bucks that got rundown from the rut were immediately subjected to a rough winter with low temps and lots of snow cover. The stress may have been too much. Regardless, they are finding them.
On Saturday the crew swells to 11 searchers and they are going to take on the bulk of the farm. I'll keep you updated on their success.
Of course, we will be producing a couple of shed hunting shows from the results of this weekend and probably the next couple weekends, as well.
