And we're off . . .

The season is upon us.

Time is a funny, funny thing. When the deer season closes on Jan.1, I can't help but feel like the wait for October will be an agonizing one. And then -- BOOM! -- before we know it, the season is fast upon us. Time flies and crawls. All at once.

But the wait is just about over. In less than five weeks, we'll be chasing Michigan whitetails. Heck, some of us -- including me -- will cheat a bit and head to other states with earlier openers. I'll be in Nebraska for their Sept. 15 archery opener and I'm hoping the trip will be one of redemption.

Redemption. That is perhaps the unofficial theme of 2010 for the Michigan team. We had a great first year killing eight bucks on tape including a pair that topped 140 inches. Given the way the season went in Michigan, I'd say that's pretty solid. But I spent all off-season thinking about the things we could have done better. And there were plenty. We could have gotten better footage. We could have got more deer on tape. Could have, would have, should have.

But perhaps that's the thing I like most about hunting -- there is always another sunrise. Another chance. Another day. I am never more hopeful than during the fall. Because no matter how bad a day goes, I know that I can go to sleep and wake up to a brand new dawn in the woods. Where anything is possible.

We have posted our first episode of the season. A quick highlight-style promo to get your juices flowing. We'll come back on Aug. 30 with our first full episode of the season. We're going to take a little different approach this season and incorporate a journal-style format designed to get you more information from our teams around the state. I think you'll enjoy it.

Thanks for watching in 2009. And here's looking for a terrific 2010.
