20100816104823328.jpgDerik Jones was raised with a love and great respect for the outdoors. He started out simply watching and learning how to walk quietly through the dry leaves, while every step was followed by stern, but patient looks from his dad and older brothers. It didn't take long for Derik to realize that hunting and being outside was more than just a hobby. Bowhunting for the last six years has developed into a passion.  He now studies every aspect of the hunt - trying to get close to big whitetails. He learned that there was a lot more to it than just hanging a stand in a tree near a trail.

Hunting whitetails is a year long adventure involviong everything from trail cameras, situating stands for each wind direction, to planting food plots, walking miles to find sheds and having immeasurable patience. Filming hunts these last three years has really changed the way Derik spends his time in the woods. Derik loves the added challenge of capturing it all on film and is excited to bring it to the viewers of Midwest Whitetail.

The following words are Derik's:

DERIK'S 2010 HIT LIST

20100825142521938.jpg"City Boy"

I have a little bit of history with this buck from 2009. It started with numerous trail cam pictures to an encounter or glimpse of this buck in October. This big framed eight point never presented me with an opportunity in 2009.

I just thought this was another case of a buck with a huge range and he had moved on to another property, but he showed back up in June with a nice kicker off his G2. "City Boy" is definitely on the top of my hit list for 2010. I have changed a few things on this property and hopes this is the year everything falls into place and I get a chance at this buck.

20100825153930273.jpg "Blade 8s" are paired as one hit list target for a simple reason; I hardly get pictures of one without the other. Both deer are big framed 8 pointers and sort of have opposite characteristics. The wider, more massive one is named "Wide Blade". The tall tight one is named "Tall Blade". I was fortunate enough to find one side from both deer last February, again both drops were found within 100yrds of each other. With pictures of them from 2009 and again in 2010, both impressive eight pointers have added some inches this year. Although I don’t have a lot of pictures of the Blade 8s this year, I still have confidence that they are hanging around that farm.

I am very excited to hunt the "Blade 8s" because of the history I have with them. I can’t wait to get a look at one of these bucks this year.
