The Hit Lists Are Coming . . . I Hope

This is probably going to sound pretty crass but I had a smile on my face when I read Bill's blog about the difficulty he's had assembling a hit list this season. He has one deer on his list. Yeah, me too.
I don't mean that I'm glad to hear Bill is struggling. That dude will find a deer he likes. I guarantee it. It's what he does and he's very, very good at it. Me, on the other hand, well I'm not that good. And that's the truth. I find more ways to screw things up than anyone I know. So to be sitting here in late August and have just one deer on the list, well, that makes me plenty nervous. But I am just not seeing deer let alone the type of bucks I want on my list.
There are lots of cool things about the Midwest Whitetail format. I love the semi-live style and the fact that we're are really just a group of normal dudes with abnormal afflictions for all things whitetail. We have normal lives, jobs and families. And sometimes that mix proves to make things difficult when it comes to figuring out where the big deer are. It's NEVER easy to find a buck that's at least three years of age in Michigan -- and my personal limit is age three. I won't kill a buck younger. And so far this summer I have seen one buck on ground I can hunt that I believe to be three years old. Well, I should rephrase. I actually have seen a number of really good bucks on or very near places I can hunt. But I have been snakebit when it comes to getting photos or video. I've gotten nothing more than fleeting glimpses that leave me wondering if I really saw what I think I saw. And that's not what it takes to make a reasonable, realistic hit list.
My son, who is 9, is in his first year of football. It's awesome but it also means there is practice every night of the week. I also have a "real" job that's been extremely active this summer and that has cut into my scouting time. But the biggest problem is that I actually don't know where I'll be hunting this fall. Yeah, I know. It's almost September and the season is approaching very, very fast. But I have several new farms that I'm trying to secure permission on that I think will be really, really good. But I have not been able to get a final answer yet. And so I wait. And it's definitely killing me. But it's also kind of exciting to think about. I love hunting new places.
So the next few weeks are crucial. They could, in fact, make or break my season. Yeah, that's a bit nerve-wracking. But it could also be very cool. Stay tuned. We'll post our first full-length episode on Monday. We have a few tricks up our sleeves and a new format that I think you'll enjoy.
