Here We Go!  With bow season just around the corner, the prostaff is in full swing hanging stands, planting food plots, checking trail cameras, and filming velvet bucks.  This blog will be used to keep you abreast with what the prostaff is seeing and doing.  If you are a hunter in Missouri or nearby, this blog will give you a vital tool for most recent information (MRI).  If you want to know what is going on in the Missouri woods this is the blog for you.

This time of year I get serious about scent control.  I have made the switch to unscented everything: soap, deoderant, laundry detergent, shampoo, etc.  I wash my hunting clothes in one of the name brand unscented hunting detergents and line dry them.  I also switch all general laundry in a "free and clear" laundry detergent, I don't like to dry off with a towel that smells like a flower shop before hunting.  The only soap left in my shower is unscented and I use it everyday, not just before hunting (same with deoderant).  This has worked well for me in the past we'll see if it pays off this year.

PICT0021.JPGTwo weeks!!!  Seriously, where has the time gone.  Checked the trail cameras and got another picture of "rib bone" during midday.  One of the other big boys showed up as well, but its too far to tell which buck it is.  The bucks were still in velvet, but it won't be long and they will be peeling it off.

Of course it is time to shoot your bow, but here are some of the things that I do to improve my shooting success.  First, I believe it is very important to shoot at least 10 yards and even better 20 yards past your maximum shooting distance.  In other words, if you plan to take a forty yard shot on a deer, it will benefit you to shoot out to 60 yards.

The second thing I do is to make some shooting sessions as near to the real thing as possible.  Practice makes perfect, right?  WRONG!! Perfect practice makes perfect!  I have found that shooting in my hunting clothes from a treestand with my safety harness is very different than shooting in shorts and a t-shirt on the ground.  If you take your backyard shooting sessions to the next level you will be more comfortable when that giant buck steps out into your shooting lane.

August, 30

Hello from hot and dry Southern MO.  Yesterday we finished planting our fall food plots with Wheat, Brassica's, and Clover and today we got about 1/2 inch of rain.  We are very hopeful this will give them a good start to being attractive by the archery opener, just three weeks away! We focus our food plot locations on old log landings and next to timber on the back side of our hay fields.  This will give us a variety of hunting opportunities from the archery season opener, through late muzzle loader season.  We're still getting some good buck pictures on our trail cam's over mineral licks and are forming a plan for the first couple of weeks of the season.  We will keep praying for rain and hope to get on some good deer before the acorns start dropping and force us back into the hardwoods.  Other than that we're shooting our bows, hanging stands, and getting more pumped up by the day for deer season.
