Early Season Success and Youth Hunt Plans
Posted By Bill Winke at 9/24/2010 12:00:00 AM

You probably thought I was going to leave that Jim Ryser Blog up there for the entire season.  I thought it was a really cool video segment so I left it there a long time to give everyone ample time to see it.  But now it is time to get back to the deer hunting.

MISSOURI SUCCESS

20100924053727876.jpgThe seasons are open in a number of states and you can see examples of that in a number of the recent episodes posted to the site.  I am going to call particular attention to the most recent episode from Missouri.  Rick Knochel, co-host of the Missouri series, took the number one buck from his hit list on opening day.

We all lay out our plans but it is very rare when these plans actually work.  We need the plan so we have a starting point that we can tweak from, but Rick didn’t need to do any tweaking.  His plan worked perfectly and his brother Joe was in the stand with a camera to prove it.  Joe did an awesome job capturing the excitement and the feel of opening day in Missouri and Rick did a super job creating the episode.  It has everything: big bucks, strategy, nice video, a happy ending.  Check it out by watching MO10.6: “Wishbone”.

Believe it or not, Rick’s buck was just one of four good hit list bucks that fell to the MO pro staff during the first week of the season!  Keep your eyes pealed for future episodes that will highlight these hunts.

By the way, the Midwest Whitetail - Missouri blog is awesome.  It has to be one of the best deer strategy blogs on the web.  I am not just saying that because it is on my site, it really is that good.  Check it out at: Missouri Blog.

YOUTH SEASON AT THE WINKES’

I am trying to get Jordan and Andrew out but the weather has been foiling our plans.  In four attempts, the weather has permitted only one true outing and at that it was so gloomy and foggy we decided to sit inside the old log cabin to keep ourselves and the camera equipment dry.  We saw five bucks, but all were young.  The kids have killed enough deer now that they don’t get to shoot young bucks anymore (at least not with the gun).  Fortunately, the season lasts two more weekends and the week in between, so I hope the weather cooperates so we can get them out.

The same problem that stymied my summer scouting is impeding the youth hunts: standing corn.  We have tons of it and the deer are starting to feed in it regularly.

We have homecoming this evening, but we’ll be back in the deer woods Saturday and Sunday evenings, so be sure to watch the Monday episode of the Main Show to see how we do.  I am going to focus on stands near the corn to see what comes out.  Who knows what may show up!  That is excitement of deer hunting.  The big ones are here, we just need a bit of luck.
