Rut Update: Slow Times
Posted By Bill Winke at 11/8/2010 12:00:00 AM

I am not one to complain, but this has been a really poor week of hunting – surprisingly poor.  I have spoken with a number of others in my area that hunt every day and my experiences are

I have gotten used to this sight:
an empty food plot in front of my tree stand.

common to all of us.  The rut seems to be occuring at a limited pace, but for some reason, the bucks aren’t cruising much.  For example, yesterday, November 7 (the day that I feel is the best
single day of the season most years) I did not see a single buck.
I saw only two does off in the distance.

I don’t have any answers for you.  I don’t think this poor showing is confined just to my neighborhood. I think it is more widespread, probably having something to do with the weather patterns or possibly even the moon phases.  I have never paid much attention to moon phases, but I am not coming up with any good reasons for the lack of movement this year, so I am grasping at straws.

About all you can do is keep hunting smart and hard.  It only takes one hot doe to run through and the bucks will be all around you.  Until then, however, it sure seems as if the rut has not even started here.  If you are having similar experiences, don’t feel alone.  We are all fighting through this one together.

Good luck.  I hope, for all our sakes, that the conditions change soon.
