Rut Update: Nov. 9 – Increased Action

For whatever reason, the hottest temperatures of the season brought out the hottest action of the season.
Doesn’t make much sense, but we did have an action-packed day today (Nov. 9). In the morning we had two mature bucks come within close range of the tree. I missed the one (for various reasons that have to do with shot timing and filming hunts) and the other one left just a few seconds before my cameraman Greg Clements could get into position to shoot him.
I have included photos of a couple of the bucks.

Then this evening we had two apparently hot does (or at least the bucks were hoping they were hot). We ran smack into a chase while wading the creek to the stand and got some awesome footage of buck stepping from the water and shaking himself off at close range. Nearly got us wet! None of the bucks in that chase were shooters.
Then at the stand we had a nice mature basic eight pointer come within 40 yards and stand there tempting Greg to shoot. He was just a bit too far for the shot and Greg decided to pass, but that was three mature bucks in one day.
I think the key to this year’s rut is simple luck. If a hot doe comes past (or is at least in the area) you will see lots of action and you will think the rut is going crazy. However, the guy sitting on the other side of the ridge, outside of the range of the chase, may think the rut hasn’t even started. That seems to be the way it is going this year.
Maybe the action we saw today is the first stages of a change in activity.
We can certainly hope so. With the cooler weather forecast for late in the week, I am pointing toward Friday, Saturday and Sunday as good days.
I’ll try to bring you a rut update every day, if I have something to report.
Good luck and hunt safe.
